Belgian Re-Release FRANKENSTEIN Poster & CURSE OF MUMMY Poster |
Lead | |
|
These 2 posters are currently offered for sale on ebay. the seller says the first is a 1950's re-release for the original 1931 FRANKENSTEIN, which
features a prominent image of Glenn Strange as the Monster, rather than Karloff. The second, from the same seller, is said to be a first release poster (1944),
of the Chaney Jr film, THE MUMMY'S CURSE. Neither of these looks like belgian posters that would have been done during either decade. Also, the same
artist's name appears on both posters. Anyone have any idea when these might have been created? Maybe the 1970's? The MUMMY poster, especially, looks
very NON 1940s or even 1950's. The artwork is just not of the same caliber or detail.
The seller is asking 1750.00 for the FRANKENSTEIN poster and 1250.00 for the MUMMY.

The "Mummy's Curse" poster has artwork of Tom Tyler, who portrayed the Mummy in the 1940 Universal "The Mummy's Hand."

The same artist's signature.. what looks like BOS (or something similar--it's hard to see)... appears on both, as well. I was more just curious if
others had seen these around before, also.

Having seen these posters a few times over the years, I believe that they were printed in the 1950`s.Their prices seem very high as well.

hi dario and chaney-- thanks for the responses. knowing what Belgian artwork for the period of the 50's looks like.. and with the MUMMY especially, it
looks like a very cheaply done rendition. were posters of this caliber done for a specific purpose? and Glenn Strange on the FRANKENSTEIN poster-- i mean..
what a blunder.

the Universal International logo says it all
1950s all the way.. Frankenstein = $200-300 Mummy = $100-150 |

i did notice the Uni Int'l logo.. and this could indicate 1950's or even the early 60's... (as Universal International existed from 1946-1962;
Realart Pics had the rights to the Universal's early horror films from 1949-1954). thanks, too, rich, for what sounds like much more realistic prices, as
well.

you're welcome Jeff.. I might even bit a little low on Frankie.. maybe it can go as much as $400-600 on priced lists. on ebay I haven't seen one in
some time and they were usually in the $200 range

1950s, and Rich is completely correct about the U-I logo.
The FRANKENSTEIN has also been reproed as one of those PRINTED IN BELGIUM jobs, although from what I can see it looks like a real one. MUMMY'S CURSE may well be a "first release" for Belgium poster, as it would not have seen a release during WW2. Slapping a Tom Tyler on it instead of a (hic!) Lon Chaney Jnr would have been not unusual due to the flood of US product back-logged, especially "B" s like the Universal's MUMMY 40s franchise. |
