I could use help on my upcoming "best NON-U.S. poster artist" poll |
Lead | |
|
I could use your help with my next poll, which is "best non-U.S. poster artist".
Some that come to mind right off are:
Chantrell (U.K.)
Venturi (Argentina)
Martinatti (Italy)
Ballister (Italy)
Mascii (France)
Soubie (France)
but there are lots more, and I would appreciate suggestions on others before I start racking my near-senior brain for others.
Who do YOU think is the best primarily "non-U.S. poster artist", based on their entire body of work, not just one or two great posters?
Thanks much!
Bruce

Vincent Lorant-Heilbronn, hands down. Did some of the most psychotropic posters ever done for movies, most before the turn of 1910 for Pathe. Waaaaaay ahead
of the curve.
More modern (relatively speaking) would be Roland Coudon. Did some fantastic, classic grandes. --Peter |

I'm not sure he qualifies under your "body of work" criterion but you might consider adding Renato Casaro. He still had a studio in Spain 4 years
ago. Some of his early work was signed C. Rene.

A. Capitani does (did) some great work as well. I think he's Italian

Forgot about the Stenberg brothers from the Soviet Union. They tend to get left out of these sorts of discussions and they really don't deserve it.

Does a poster studio count? For example, the Richardson studio in Oz?

Bruce.. where are the Polish & Czech artists??
I'd ask about the Russian artists too.. but I don't think we know who did most of the 1960s-onward posters |

That is a good point Rich. Sadly, I am going to not give as a choice anonymous artists, because it may have been a team of guys copying each other (as was done
in comics as well).
I think "Richardson Studio" should be a choice, and I would like to have most countries represented. I will avoid the artists who worked super-long ago, where only major buffs know their work. Bruce |

If course, you could look at as an opportunity to make their work known. I'd put any Stenberg Brothers poster against any Saul Bass or (Dog forbid, Drew
Struzan...) poster out there. Not my marketing opp...um...poll though.

Best poster artists? | ||

A few contenders:
UK: In addition to Tom Chantrell - Brian Bysouth (brilliant action/adventure illustrator), Vic Fair (primarily a designer, rather than an illustrator), Renato Fratini (although Italian, did most of his film work based in the UK during the 60s and is regularly cited as a bona fide genius), Arnaldo Putzu (another Italian ex-pat, distinctive and very prolific). France: In addition to Roger Soubie and Jean Mascii - Boris Grinsson, Guy Gerard Noel (if only for his series of extraordinarily vivid Hammer posters), Michel Landi (ditto). Italy: Casaro seconded, plus also Anselmo Ballester, Averardo Ciriello, Mario Piovano, Enrico De Seta. Belgium: I'm on shakier ground here, but Raymond Elseviers ("Ray") seems to be top of the heap. As for Germany, Poland and the former Eastern bloc countries...I'll leave those for others more expert than my ignorant self. A few examples: Bysouth
Fair
Noel
Landi
Elseviers [after the UK quad by Fratini]
Ciriello
Mascii
Putzu

Yes! Pics that's a good idea.
This designer thing was hanging in the air already anyway. Here's my case for Frans Mettes, Dutch just like me. He started out doing movie posters, but is an exponent of the pre-war Dutch graphic design school. I like his versatility, his ability to combine typography with image and his knack to add originality whilst stealing the best bits from original US-art. You've already seen my Son Of Kong, which is the only poster I have made by Mettes. Here are few other and different designs: Last days of Pompeii
Angel
Boys Town:
Joan Of Arc:
After World War II he mainly made commercial designs and he became more stylized. Oranges - to kiss for:
A long line of fruit-flavored schnaps ("something good under the cork"):
Swimming clothing:

As E
Rich (evansrc) points out Lenica should be on the list Bruce a fine and different body of work. One more from the UK Eric Pulford: for nearly half a century his design promoted British cinema and Leveque from France as well. Simon

And what about Raymond GID?
Who? Precisely. Did the art for "Les Diaboliques" and "Le Silence de la Mer" - both at the more artistic / interpretative end of the poster art spectrum. The latter has some very subtle red/white/blue flames (French flames...) burning below the ghostly silhouette of a Nazi officer. But as I don't have pics to hand for either, rather moot. |
