Interesting read Phil, what a greedy unimaginative thief.

Definitely an interesting read. The only problem I see with it is the fact he has now copyrighted images that were never his to begin with for profit.
If this wasn't the case, I would have no problem with him using these images and altering them to his needs as graffiti for dissemination to a MUCH wider audience...

CSM wrote:in the art world we don't exactly say it that way CSM. He has used the older imagery as icons to create his newer art and it is a common practice to some degree. what is the difference is not that he used these images or copyrighted his versions (totally legal). The difference is exactly what the article points out - that he does not credit these older imagery and therefore let someone else do an expose. His variations of the original imagery is totally acceptable and fully copyrightable. But his lack of candor is telling, presuming it is true that he has not previously mentioned his use of icons. Keep in mind, it does not prevent anyone else from using the original imagery as their own source material, and if someone uses his interpretations as icons, he may have less of a "leg to stand on" against another artist than he may have had otherwise if he were to sue them. That said, I find his uses of the original material quite well done. |

I do, I offer a complete and utter retraction. The imputation was totally without basis in fact, and was in no way fair comment, and
was motivated purely by malice, and I deeply regret any distress that my comments may have caused you, or your family, and I hereby undertake not to repeat any
such slander at any time in the future.

warhol wasn't the first.. Lichtenstein starting doing his comic panels I think as early as 1959, but most certainly by 61-62. Warhol started iconographic
art in the mid-60s
I'm sure there were many before either of them |

I think the key point is " When Lichtenstein painted Look Mickey, a 1961 oil on canvas portrait of Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck, everyone was cognizant of
the artist's source material - they were in on the joke. By contrast, Fairey simply filches artworks and hopes that no one notices - the joke is on
you."
And as one photographer puts it near the end of the article, "If I italicized 'Moby-Dick,' then would it be my book? I don't know. But I don't think so." But this guy really fits in the fine art world, where most of the participants in the high dollar stuff are scamming the government one way or another. Bruce |

I really liked the Obama picture and went looking for a signed print around the time of the election. I came across this website back then and decided I wanted
nothing to do with the artist. It's really a shame that nobody from the Obama campaign called him out on the copywrite violations.

When I saw the Obama posters last year I was bowled over by the design and had no doubt the artist had created something that would live on as an (sorry for
over-used word, but it applies here) "icon," something like that Che photo that ended up launching a billion t-shirts.
I didn't know anything about Fairey at the time but had seen the Obey imprint around. Later I found out about the controversy surrounding his work and his appropriation of others' images. This time around, though, he may finally get bitten on the ass by this practice. Right now there are at least two lawsuits surrounding his use of the photo he based his Obama posters on; one by the photographer who actually took the original picture and the other by the wire service the photog works for...

I was down one of my local galleries yesterday and they have one of these up for sale, it's entitled Bombi :
http://www.richardgoodallgallery.com/contemporaryart/images/bombiBA.jpeg Can't remember how many of them are availible, it was numbered, people either really like it or despise it, I was with a lady who hated it for what it was and what it stood for. Simon

That was a really stupid article! And I'm pretty surprised so many here are taking it at face value. Seriously, has nobody heard around about postmodernism
around these parts? This is a typical example of a modern artist who is re-mixing, quoting, mashing up and generally putting culture in a blender - plagiarism
it is most definitely not.
And looking at the images, which are already iconic and well-known to begin with, I can only wonder what this guy was smoking: "By contrast, Fairey simply filches artworks and hopes that no one notices - the joke is on you." If he didn't get permission to use some images that are still in copyright, that is another issue, but as an argument against the art itself this was one of the most idiotic "revelations" I've read in a long time. |

I agree with lars, for one who cares? for 2, if an artist can make a buck then he or she is VERY lucky, for three if some person enjoys it, well done
