Really really really great movie. Hoffman is just a genius me thinks. Well done Eric...If you didn't keep harping on about the film not sure I would have seen it, which would really have been a shame. My only gripe...WTF with the burning house? Re Public Enemies...but it has Johnny Depp...it has to be fantabulous Cool Ves, I found it to be a very interesting film, a film about nothing really, but yet about everything, Beginning with the newspaper article about Avian Flu (Pandemics), our society's obesesivness with our colons and colon cleanses. paranoid hypochondriacs who are so afraid of dying they forget to live, it touched on mental illness and being in a fragmented state, , aging and the loss of friends creative art snobs, who are devoid of emotion and peddle pooh-pooh an almost apocolyptic horror film, which reminded me of the Masque of Red Death! The burning house to me symbolised her, she burned for him and lived life unafraid, unafraid of dying, even though she eventually succombed to smoke inhalation. What I like most about this film is that no 2 people will walk away from it feeling the same thing. Bravo and Thankyou Eric!

I saw it as a film about the relationship about art and life, but also about how the artist (who was obviously the alter ego of Kaufman) in the pursuit of that meaningful masterpiece which perfectly encapsulates the human condition risks forgetting to live himself. The burning house was a great and very funny metaphor for the essential difference between Hazel and Caden. Hazel knows she is going to die from it eventually, but still moves in, marries and has children. She lives her life to the fullest, whereas Caden does not accept death as a part of life, fears it and lets this fear (among other issues) control his life. I think I am going to watch it again.

Probably miles and miles more interesting than Synecdoche, New York. Probably quite easily! The music and sound were superb!

I really liked the anime film and am now feeling drawn to the live action version. Shelly

I have heard mixed reviews from friends and people on the board. Fingers crossed I will like it as I was really looking forward to it. In the "just watched category", saw Transformers this afternoon. In my opinion it was good summer fun with some great one-liners and nowhere near as bad as people make it out to be. Take it for what it is and all should be well. I also watched 1953 The Hitch-Hiker directed by Ida Lupino. Such a simple plot and setting and yet the suspense is maintained throughout. This was really enjoyable! 8/10 CSM

Yes, but you knew exactly which scene I was talking about. I am not ready to lay it all off on Depp's performance, but it's as good a place as any to start. It's strictly a good popcorn flick and nothing else, which is a shame considering Mann's past efforts. I do, I offer a complete and utter retraction. The imputation was totally without basis in fact, and was in no way fair comment, and was motivated purely by malice, and I deeply regret any distress that my comments may have caused you, or your family, and I hereby undertake not to repeat any such slander at any time in the future.

IF this was made in the 80's by an Italian it would be a film that us horror nerds would be drooling over. The shame is from Night/Dawn/Day (which IMHO gets better with each one) this lets us down, BUT it is good cheesey fun. As a stand alone film - similar to MOTHER OF TEARS in that we expected so much. Sorry, was on a little vacation. Let the basking begin. I am seriously thrilled that you and Susan and Jens seemed to like it so much. It is very validating because it is not an "easy" watch in some ways, and so I am happy (and relieved) that others didn't find it a waste of time. I found it profoundly moving (particularly the last segment, which I will paste in another email since I can't paste it in sequence below), and also funny and insightful, without being overly pretentious. It is quickly becoming one of my all-time faves. Like Susan and Jens commented, it captured something about "life" and "art" and "identity" that felt true and real (to me): the constant struggle to capture and hold onto something perfect or true, and how you cannot live in the moment while simulatenously trying to make sense of it or hold onto it, or be afraid to live and take risks. It also conveyed that sense of despair in being consumed or lost in attempts to find meaning and purpose amid the meaningless and random experiences of life. And, in that sense, Hazel was the existential hero of it all (and I agree with what Jens and Susan said about the burning house -- that was my take as well). Layers and layers of stuff, without it feeling like a lecture or forced, or, worse, like a French film. (Cf. Benjamin Button). I don't know -- I wish I could articulate it in words better. It's worth a second watch because there are some very interesting layers woven in there (pay attention to the newspaper shots in the opening scenes in the kitchen, for example).
