Here we have to sit through endless repeats of crappy tv shows....they are keen on showing the same episodes at least 4 or 5 times every 6 months.

In Oz showing old movies never happens unless it's in the wee hours of the morning.

Ves is completely right.
Australian TV is the worst. The best things are the Rank and RKO libraries that the ABC holds and runs in the wee small hours (cool if you live in an area that gets digital TV... Soldiers Point isn't one of them)... and SBS used to be great for non-English language films sans advertising and shown uncut up to an MA rating, but about 18 months ago SBS decided they needed the extra revenue advertising brought and instead of placing the commercial breaks between programmes, they trundle them through just like the commercial free-to-air, complete with supers reminding you what you are watching, what's coming up next. The three commercial networks are completely unwatchable (a 3 hour film clocks in at just on 4.5 hours with commercials, for example) and Murdoch's cable monopoly Foxtel is not worth the money. TCM is boosted from the Hong Kong feed and there are about 150 movies in rotation since Foxtel started, and the only "new" films worth a watch are PPV at $6.95 each... and most of them are on $1 a week rental shelves. The original ITALIAN JOB played free to air when the new version (ahem) was released, but with 7 minute ad breaks every 5 minutes, not terribly apprtising. But there are, oddly, some films that for one reason or another that escape all the best intentions over the years - and THE ITALIAN JOB was one of them. Phil |

cinemarts wrote:Yeah, pretty much. I mean, it's watchable, but it just looks...grotty. Plus the image is afflicted with a borderline-annoying "cross-hatch" pattern that really shouldn't be there. But (sigh) since I can't imagine Universal is about to revisit this title any time in the near future, this will have to do for the moment. Unless an overseas release is a possibility - after all, Universal's shameful pan-and-scan hatchet job on COLOSSUS-THE FORBIN PROJECT in region 1 was unexpectedly rectified by the excellent UK special edition, so I suppose there might be a small glimmer of hope... |

Started to watch Peeping Tom, then got interupted so had to stop. WEIRD...couldn't really get into it that much, but I'm hoping that left alone the
second time round, this will change.

If they can peep through the heavily curtained (not to mention the blinds) upstairs window, then I say fair enough effort...they should be able to peep all
they want

Been watching PEEPING TOM over many years, from it's first release in Australia (heavily cut) and now seen it several times. It seems to get more
disturbing the more one sees it.
Hard to imagine that one film could have such an impact on a director's subsequent career. However both THEY'RE A WEIRD MOB and AGE OF CONSENT did far better business (on a budget to profit ratio) than most Michael Powell watchers ever give them credit for and certainly THEY'RE A WEIRD MOB remains one of the most telling and observant "social snapshots" ever taken of Australia at a specific time in its history. been watching OUTER LIMITS, one last night about an alien that took control of tumble weeds, frogs and boulders was AWSOME, then one about a guy from the
future with a robot hand that spoke to him! cripes some of the photography, lighting and set designs of this show is AMAZING, like Film Noir meets German
Expressionism - very well produced show. if only someone would make a SF/Fantasy/Horror/whatever show like this nowadays.

I wonder how many variations there are? The first time I heard or reads this, was the last man on earth became so depressed he went to the top of the Empire State Building and jumped off. Just as he passed the 50th floor he heard a phone ring. |

COLOSSUS-THE FORBIN PROJECT
Unwatchable in that p/s version, but the 2.35 version holds up really well. No wonder it's in the remake works. Is the FRANKENSTEIN available anywhere in a good print? Thanks, Steve. |
