Bruno - Fast, very funny and, thankfully, at 82 minutes, it ends before it wears out it's welcome. After one
particular scene, one thing is abundantly clear: If this didn't get a NC-17 rating from the MPAA, then nothing will short of showing actual penetration.
I do, I offer a complete and utter retraction. The imputation was totally without basis in fact, and was in no way fair comment, and
was motivated purely by malice, and I deeply regret any distress that my comments may have caused you, or your family, and I hereby undertake not to repeat any
such slander at any time in the future.

In Bruges.
Wow, what a pleasant surprise. Very witty and extremely well-written. Never was a big fan of Colin Farrell, but I thought he was fantastic in this one. One of the better comedies I have seen in a while. This Is England. I thought it was okay. The lead actors (the kid and the nasty skinhead) were quite good.

Not close to being in the same league as Romper Stomper or even American History X. In Bruges was one of the best films of last year - easily in the top ten. It was quite funny, but I don't know that I'd call it a comedy. Farrell has always had that movie start presence, but was rarely what one would consider 'good'. That, and the films generally sucked. Here, he is on full-tilt charm. I hope that he keeps it going...

Yes. Romper Stomper is beloved in Canada too!

And I saw Bruno today. What else is there to say but "vulgar", "satirical" and "hilarious"!?
Not quite on the same level as Borat probably owing to Borat's "originality" but still a great commentary on modern Western society...

the archie leach experience wrote:Pretty much agree with everything above -- I thought the ending of This is England was particularly weak, but the "bad" skinhead was a great actor and there were some flashes of grit here and there that worked. Romper Stomper is much, much better -- haven't seen American X. (And, yes, this was on IFC, I think?) True, In Bruges wasn't a clear comedy -- hard to categorize. In any event, excellent dialogue and I might change my opinion on Farrell if he keeps delivering performances like that. Still thinking about the film, which is always a good sign about a movie. I forgot how much I crave (and enjoy) good dialogue -- a dying art in many films.

Seems there was a second season, nearly two years after the first. Starts on cable in Australia soon. |

I saw Teorema at Cinemtheque Ontario on Saturday night and I was thoroughly delighted by it in every sense and especially so when I could feast my eyes on
Silvana Mangano. Good Lord!
My first (but not last) Pasolini. |

Criss Cross - 1949 - watched this for a second time. Still great and VERY underappreciated noir by Siodmak. Yvonne De Carlo is a beauty and
one of the best femme fatales. Lancaster & Duryea mmmm hmmmm...Also has the classic voice over narration and many allusions to the inescapability of fate.
Ending is extremely bleak (which means it's just about perfect!)
Some loverly lass found me a very perty daybill too

If you liked Criss Cross, it's worth seeing Soderbergh's re-working of its as UNDERNEATH (1995). Some people thought it too smart for
itself (i.e. "complicated") but it's looking better as time goes by. Make sure to see the 2.35 version.

KONGA - one of those ones that for one reason or another I had just never seen. Didn't help that it was banned in Australia in 1961 and certainly
hasn't seem to have made it to TV over the years.
Super-cheesy and hugely entertaining. Right up there with MESA OF LOST WOMEN and it's glossy sheen production make it even more absurd. Not to be missed. |

LAKE MUNGO is a low budget Australian ghost story that's done in a semi-documentary style that has a creeping eeriness that packs a quiet but solid punch.
No wonder the US remake rights were picked up so quickly, although I can imagine that all they will keep is the central story shock. Like Eastwood's
terrific film CHANGELING, what lies at the core of LAKE MUNGO is something quite insidiously disturbing that sticks long after the last frames have passed.
Despite great advance press, it's getting limited release in Australia as it seems that the multiplExes are just too overwhelmed with TRANSFORMERS and ICE
AGE 3 to squeeze in one of the best Australian genre films I have seen in years.

cinemarts wrote: I should have said 'If they wanted the chance...'. It is not too dissimilar in the US at the moment. The best new film around is The Hurt Locker (see below) and it's not even available in the nearly pervasive digital format, keeping it out of many theatres on that basis alone.

Do not miss The Hurt Locker. Despite a cliche moment or two, this film delivers on all fronts and is he best action movie that I have seen in
a very, very long time.
A.O. Scott of the New York Times sums up my thoughts: If "The Hurt Locker" is not the best action movie of the summer, I'll blow up my car. The movie is a viscerally exciting, adrenaline-soaked tour de force of suspense and surprise, full of explosions and hectic scenes of combat, but it blows a hole in the condescending assumption that such effects are just empty spectacle or mindless noise. Ms. Bigelow, whose body of work (including "Point Break," "Blue Steel," "Strange Days" and "K-19: The Widowmaker") has been uneven but never uninteresting, has an almost uncanny understanding of the circuitry that connects eyes, ears, nerves and brain. She is one of the few directors for whom action-movie-making and the cinema of ideas are synonymous. You may emerge from "The Hurt Locker" shaken, exhilarated and drained, but you will also be thinking.
