I just watched Planet of the Apes for the ump-teenth time last night. Despite it's cheesy moments, I just can't turn it off whenever it comes on. I feel the same way about a lot of his pictures, with Touch of Evil being my personal favorite... I do, I offer a complete and utter retraction. The imputation was totally without basis in fact, and was in no way fair comment, and was motivated purely by malice, and I deeply regret any distress that my comments may have caused you, or your family, and I hereby undertake not to repeat any such slander at any time in the future. Heston was Planet of the Apes for me. I never found him to be a terribly charismatic actor or anything, he was just one of those legends that you accepted as such. Like Sinatra or something. It's mystifying how they became as popular as they did, really.

I thought the casting of CH as Cardinal Richelieu in The 3 (and 4) Musketeers was, while unexpected, a great decision. Least favorites: Skyjacked, Airport 1975, and Earthquake, but at least he made all three tolerable to sit through. Plus all the others I paid money to see: Gray Lady Down, 2-Minute Warning, etc. etc. etc. We always looked forward to a new Charleton Heston film. As a fan I give him a bit more stature as an larger-than-life actor. He was a huge draw in the 1960s and 1970s. I can understand the "mystification" of Heston. When he appeared as the eye patch wearing boss of intelligence agent Arnold Schwarzenegger in True Lies I wanted to movie switch gears and be about HIM! He seemed so much more interesting and Arnold. I didn't always agree with his politics (be brought the NRA into Colorado a few days after the Colombine shootings. Yikes! Insensitive and boneheaded, to say the least) but I sure enjoyed his work in front of the camera. BTW, I just spoke to Fred. He said HI! - pj Last Edited By: BadAngel 04/06/2008 08:24:41. And, amazing how many iconic roles he played in his career. Growing up, and seeing his films on regular rotation on the television, it struck me how often his characters are chased or hunted in them: even before he died, I'd picture him running away from Egyptians... Romans... damned dirty apes... cannibal cover-uppers... vampiric Los Angelenos... Ava Gardner... and Michael Moore. Such a wealth of characters that cinematically will live on forever. RIP. Stay calm. Remain eclectic. ---Willibald Cornfed.
