My review:
Built To Spill:Keep It Like A Secret

Until,Eric,mentioned this band,linked up a tune,and stated everyone should own Keep it Like A Secret,I had never heard note one from this band.Which,seems a bit strange cos they are very good and have been around since the early 90's.
None the less I liked the tune he linked so recently I downloaded the record, (Which I normally don't do unless it's bootleg material).I like the actual CD in my collection.

My feelings about this band/record are as such:
GET THIS RECORD!
Upon listening to the record they are easily one of the best bands to come out of the 90's.

If you like guitar driven rock with beautiful melodies and vocals to match you'll like this record.
Creative (sometimes hypnotic) guitar rhythms overlayed with unique fill ins and solos are all over this record.
Wasn't sure about the singers voice but after some listens his vocal range fits nicely with the intrical melodies they're producing.
Lyrically,nothing spectacular but they're decent,and sometimes quite cool.

Songs like, "The Plan"..."Carry The Zero".."Sidewalk",have the 'catchy pop song' type feel too them (and I dig em' lots) but they go beyond the average 'catchy' riff/song.The guitarist and main creative force of the band, (Doug Martsch) makes great use of overdubbing throughout the record.

I don't know much about the band itself but from what I could find,they recorded the album as a trio.The creative overdubbing give them a larger dynamic sound on this record.Like most great rock trios.Except they're not a trio now.

Back to my point...the multiple guitar tracks laid on top of each other,somewhat seperate they're 'catchy' tunes form other groups 'catchy' songs.Just when ya think you know where a song is heading, another guitar emerges and takes some of the songs on the record in a entirely different direction than you thought.
Very cool,very creative,and gives them a very original sound.
Unlike many of the strictly 'power chord' type groups of today.

The Plan - First song on the record.Sorta has a Cure or Smiths hint to it.Throw in a very creative 'slide' type solo (not sure what he's doing) and you've got a great record opener.

Broken Chairs - The longest song on the record.Has a 70's jam kinda feel to it in spots.Not sure what 70's band I'm hearing but it gives me that feeling in certain sections.
The guitarist makes good use of many different chords throughout the record.Because another pretty good guitar player (Hendrix) did this,kinda get a Hendrix feel occassionally on this song.Just a little.

Time Trap - The first 1:30 or so of this song is complete brilliance!The song on a whole is okay (and growing on me) but the building up to the main riff and vocals blew me away!



As I said,don't know much about these guys.I went to wikipedia to get a track listing to make sure I got it in order when I downloaded.I did notice it said they were a trio.Or I thought.Apparently before this record they had 'floating' members.After this record they became permanent.They need another guitar player when touring anyway.Might as well make them permanent
Haven't listened to any live stuff on youtube yet.Too busy going through the new Halen tour clips.



I can't remember if Eric's always right or always wrong, but on this one he's dead on right!
One of those 'must have records.Every collection should have one.


Bottom line...good stuff.

I agree with,Shelly,Jeannie.If you like Buble you might like Harry Connick Jr.He's got some decent Christmas tunes as well.
