OT - Road Trip America |
Lead | |
|
So it's my honeymoon (belated) at end of September and I am having a lot of fun planning my American road trip. It's been a lifetime dream. Here's
the plan so far: San Francisco - visit Napa and vineyards, Anchor Brewery, spend 3 days up there. Drive down the Pacific Coastal Route Los Angeles - one day
here visiting friends. Out to Las Vegas Do the Extra Terrestrial highway Grand Canyon Down to New Mexico to Roswell and White Sands etc Through Albequeque
Santa Fe Colorado Springs. Fly out of Denver to New York 4 nights in NY I have three weeks to spend and I love wine, beer, movies, hamburgers, beautiful women
(although my wife will be with me) and adventures. Any suggestions for stuff I should do which is along this route and that would help me live the dream would
be very gratefully received.

When you are in New York...why not pop up north to Toronto, Canada? The US shouldn't get all your love and tourist dollars...
Other than that, sounds like a great itinerary!

That's a fantastic sounding trip and not too much that I would add. Don't skimp on the time to drive down the PCH to Los Angeles because Monterey ,
Carmel, Santa Barbara are all beautiful. The wine country is great and you can easily take short trips up to Mendocino and Pt. Reyes, which are also
beautiful and scenic.
I don't know if it qualifies as an adventure, but hiking up Mt. Tamalpais to stare back at the San Francisco Bay Area is beautiful. Mountain biking it is even better.

Two words: Big Sur. It's where God stays when he visits Kollyforniah. Just after Carmel headed south; contains the most southerly stands of Redwoods in KO.
In the unlikely event you can drive after Napa you could venture over to the coast to make a pilgrimage to Bodega Bay (if you're a Hitchcock fan you'll know why), then had back down to SF. In the even less likely event you make it further north (to the REAL redwoods) gimme a shout, I can show you some really bootiful scenery here abouts. One thought, that's A LOT of driving in very little time. The distances don't look so bad on a map, it's when you're in your car they can seem interminable. You're going to be spending most of your time on the road, particularly around HelLA. Timing is everything. --Peter |

muddyfunster wrote:Other than heading the wrong way out of Frisco that sounds like a great trip - September is the best time of the year in the Pacific Northwest. Peter is right though, that is a ton of driving. Try to reserve sometime to see the Rocky Mountains - plenty of good day trips depending where you are. The Coors tour in Golden was fun, but the folks at Fat Tire might be more to your liking. If you are not sick of sand by the time you reach Colorado, Sand Dunes National Park near Pueblo (South of Colorado Springs) is a neat spot. The Garden of the Gods (Colorado Springs) has some nice red rock formations, but, much like sand, you may have seen enough at that point. If, for some reason, you head west on I-70 out of Denver, past Golden, keep an eye out on the right side for the house from Woody Allen's Sleeper.
I do, I offer a complete and utter retraction. The imputation was totally without basis in fact, and was in no way fair comment, and
was motivated purely by malice, and I deeply regret any distress that my comments may have caused you, or your family, and I hereby undertake not to repeat any
such slander at any time in the future.

Muddy, you are in for a fantastic road trip. That's a lot of driving and a lot of time spent in a car, though. I'd stay in Napa Valley for as long as I could, as you can never get enough of wine tasting and fine food. How about some fine dining there? French Laundry (with a 2 month waiting list) is purported to be the best restaurant in America. I think you might be just in time to make reservations if you're going at the end of September. So, hey, why aren't you heading south towards The South? You've got to at least hit the Lone Star state! And New Orleans, even if it is a really scary place right now. Cajun food, real Texas barbecue... now that's what I'm talkin' about! Philadelphia is 1.5 hours from NYC and Washington D.C. Give me a shout if you're heading this way and I'll be happy to show you what little I know of this old, historical city (The city that is the birthplace of America! The city that rebelled against the English and crushed the mighty Crown! Oops, my bad, you're British...) How about visiting the White House? Jeannie |

I'll have 3 weeks. Maybe I need to shorten it down to take it in as I go?

When in Albuquerque drop by Louie's Rock and Reels. Nice guy. I got a bunch of Ray Harryhausen stuff from him. If you do make New Orleans, it's really
not all that scary, except at my house where I'll show off my horror/scifi collection.
